Why did the Lee-Enfield have a 10-round magazine when most of its contemporaries held only five? The answer goes back to British military doctrine and the magazine cutoff. Using a 1901 Lee-Enfield Mk I* and an SMLE, we take a look at how British soldiers could single-load cartridges while keeping a full magazine in reserve, and how charger loading later made the Lee-Enfield's 10-round capacity an even greater advantage. If you enjoy firearms history and want to support more content like this, consider supporting The Armed Outdoorsman on Patreon. The Swiss K31 is one of the most distinctive military bolt-action rifles ever made. Its straight-pull action, excellent trigger, 7.5x55 Swiss cartridge, and reputation for accuracy have made it a favorite among military surplus rifle collectors. But the K31 is unusual for another reason: unlike the Mauser 98, Lee-Enfield, Springfield 1903, and Mosin-Nagant, it was never tested in a major war.So what makes the K31 so good?In this video, I take a closer look at the Swiss K31, how its straight-pull action works, how it evolved from earlier Swiss service rifles, what it's like to shoot, and whether its reputation as one of the finest military bolt-action rifles is deserved. If you enjoy military surplus rifles, firearms history, and shooting historic firearms, subscribe to The Armed Outdoorsman for more.#K31 #SwissK31 #MilitarySurplus #militaryhistory #mechanical
